14 GOLD MEDALS FOR CORNISH FIREFIGHTER

A Cornish firefighter has just returned to the UK from the World Firefighter Games in South Korea with 14 gold medals. Sam Morris who is based at Newquay Fire Station also broke 8 county records, 3 fire service records and 9 personal bests.

The 11th World Firefighter Games were held in Daegu, South Korea and firefighters from all over the world take part competing in 75 events from ‘toughest firefighter alive’ to swimming and running.

Sam Morris from Newquay was part of the UK swimming team of 7 people who competed in 28 events over 4 days. The team produced a massive medal haul of 82 medals – 58 gold, 19 silver and 5 bronze. Sam Morris took a clean sweep of gold medals in all her individual events. A particularly proud moment for Sam was winning gold in her first open water event and she was glad that the water was a bit warmer than she is used to at home at 28 degrees.

Sam Morris comments “It was great to have the opportunity to take part in the World Firefighter Games again this year. The UK swimming team worked really hard and their achievement of 82 medals between 7 people is incredible. I am really pleased with my results and it feels great to have brought 14 gold medals back to Cornwall. I have to say a big thank you to Richfords Fire & Flood who made it possible for me to attend the games by sponsoring my trip.”
