Helpful Advice On Frozen & Burst Pipes

January 2009

Companies who would normally provide emergency assistance for these types of events are extremely busy at the moment and therefore may not be able to provide support for some days. There are actions, which occupiers can take to limit damage without prejudicing their insurance claim.

1.  Always put your health and safety first

2.  Electrical systems

Water from burst pipes will often affect the electrical systems of your property. It is important not to try to use your electrics until they have been checked by a competent electrician. The NICEIC website will provide a list of qualified electricians in your area. Ask your electrician to isolate any damaged systems and leave any undamaged systems live.

3.  Wet Loft Insulation

Wet loft insulation will hold a lot of water and can cause further damage. If you are fit and able to do so, place the wet insulation into bin bags and put them outside the property. It may be necessary to wear appropriate protection such as gloves.

4.  Carpets

Wet carpet can take a long time to dry. Laying dry towels on the floor and using them to absorb moisture can help reduce damage and shorten drying times. Also if you have access to a wet vacuum cleaner, such as a wet vax these can be very useful to remove water from carpets.

5.  Heating systems

If the heating system is functioning it should be left on 24 hours a day. By ventilating the property with the heating on the warmth will help to start the property drying.

6.  Wooden furniture

If wooden furniture is standing on wet carpets, place strong plates under the feet to prevent water absorption.

7.  Damaged Items

Do not dispose of items; your insurer will need to see ruined things to verify your claim. Simply place them in a suitable area where they will cause no further damage.
