To raise money for Helston based charity Shelterbox, over 80 local people gave up their bank holiday and worked hard to carry a Shelterbox to the same height as Mount Everest on Monday.
Richfords Fire & Flood, a local damage restoration firm, are pleased to be involved with Shelterbox. Steven Richford, Managing Director at Richfords Fire & Flood said “Richfords are dedicated to giving people their lives back following damage causing incidents such as fire and floods, and felt that our work on a national basis linked to the work Shelterbox do on a global scale. Richfords are thrilled to be involved with Shelterbox and to have taken part in the Carn Brea-Everest Challenge.”
The height of Everest base camp to the peak is 3,640m, and the height of Carn Brea from Tregajorran is 82m. The aim was to climb Carn Brea 45 times and so achieve an ascent of Everest without having to leave Cornwall! In fact, so many people turned out to take part that over 100 ascents were made, which means the teams managed the equivalent of climbing Everest twice in one day.
Rosie Stevenson, Marketing Specialist for local company Richfords Fire & Flood comments “Richfords are proud to have entered two teams in the Carn Brea-Everest Challenge and to have achieved nine ascents. It was hard work, but we all had a great time and a fantastic sense of achievement when we had finished. We have a few blisters to tend to but it was worth it!”
Carrying a Shelterbox demonstrated to the teams the difficulties of getting the boxes to remote locations, which can be especially hard when the local infrastructure has been disrupted by a flood or earthquake.
Each team comprised of three people who carried the unwieldy Shelterbox, some rigging up complicated carrying systems with poles and ropes, others strapping it to one team members back.
Mike Cooper, Business Development Manager at Richfords Fire & Flood said “It was certainly a tough challenge, but our teams did really well and we are delighted that the company managed to raise over £500 for Shelterbox, enough money to fund a full Shelterbox.”
Shelterbox provides emergency shelter provision for victims of natural and other disasters anywhere in the world. Each box supplies up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced.
