On Sunday 18th July football teams from all over Devon & Cornwall descended on Wendron Football Club for the Sharon Wood Mini-Soccer Tournament. Over 1500 young people aged between 7 and 12 years old took part as 100 teams participated in over 200 matches in 8 hours.
The fun kicked off at 10am just as the rain began. Nonetheless the teams were not deterred and some fantastic football was played throughout the day. The tournament is held every July to raise funds for Cancer Research and to support the development of youth football in the South West and this year they raised nearly £4000 for charity. It is dedicated to Sharon Wood who gave much of her time to helping the club
Home team Wendron Sharks played very well and made it to the final of the under 11’s group against Helston Hawks where they were beaten in penalties. The Sharks also won the Fair Play Trophy for being the most sportsman-like team in the tournament. They were helped along by the support of local business Richfords Fire & Flood who sponsored their new kit and kit bags as well as paying for a new fence for the pitch, something the club had needed but not been able to afford for some time.
Steven Richford, Managing Director for Richfords went along to present the team with the new kit and stayed to watch several matches. Mr Richford comments “As a local business we were pleased to be able to support Wendron Sharks by providing them with the kit they needed for the new season. It was wonderful to see over 1500 young people that were so dedicated to their sport and having a great time no matter what the weather threw at them! Congratulations to all the winning teams.”
All the winners were presented with medals and trophies that will be treasured for years to come.
Wendron Sharks team coach Paddy Winterbourne said “All the teams that take part in the tournament are of excellent standard and it is great to see the progression of each team from year to year. Wendron Sharks have been training hard over the last 12 months and played really well on the day. Thank you to all the teams and supporters who made it such a successful day.”
