During the initial assessment of an oil spill, our
technicians will use a Photo Ionisation Detector to
test for oil vapour in the air. The readings from this
machine can give an indication of the severity of a
spill and whether further investigations are required.
Following assessment with the PID Meter, our
technician may recommend further investigations
of contaminated ground, using Window Sampling.
This technique involves extracting cores of material
from the spill area. Samples from different depths
are then sent for testing and a 3D image of the spill
can be constructed.
